DRIVE I Plaza and PLD (Porous Landscape Detention) Rain Garden
Completed August 2013
The DRIVE landscape is composed of two garden parts, the entry plaza/garden and the west rain garden.
The entry plaza forms the terminus of what is now the main east-west pedestrian space linking Taxi 1, Taxi 2, and Drive. The plaza form, orientation, and materiality are the result of strategic opening in the surrounding asphalt paving. Linear rows of local concrete bin blocks sheathed in yellow translucent fiberglass seat lids point back to the original radio tower of the Taxi 1 building.
West Rain Garden:
A linear landscape fringe runs the length of the west facade, a green veil separating the DRIVE building from the parking lot. A long narrow slot, framed by offsetting partial bin block rows, serves as storm water filter. Repurposed loading dock ramps bridge this porous landscape detention feature providing access from the parking lot to the building. A canopy of cottonwoods and a carpet matrix of native grasses and shrubs offer shade and ornament.
